Illinois and Michigan Canal
The Illinois and Michigan Canal is a 96 mile waterway built by predominately Irish immigrants that linked Lake Michigan and the Mississippi River by way of the Illinois River. The I & M Canal made Chicago the great city it is today. Closed in 1933 to navigation, the canal has been developed for recreation. Shelters and picnics areas were added and the towpath was renovated for hiking and bicycling. Interpretive programs and information centers are located at various locations along the trail.

Lock 14
Lock 14 is the only lock on the canal where wooden gates have been restored. The lock was once part of a much larger complex, including a large canal boat basin between locks 14 and 15, a mile-long steamboat basin between lock 15 and the Illinois River, two grain elevators, a huge mule barn, a locktenders' house and other facilities.
