Currently 61 miles in length, this trail offers visitors scenic hiking, bicycling and snowmobiling opportunities. The trail follows the historic route of the I & M Canal. Area: Heritage Corridor. Type: Biking Trail.

Gaylord Building
Enter a world where history was made. Here, more than 150 years ago, the Gaylord Building played a major role in creation of the Illinois & Michigan Canal, the final link in America's great water highway system of the 19th century. This handsome canal-side building, made of local limestone that was unearthed while digging the canal, is a vivid link to the past. Area: Heritage Corridor. Type: Biking.

Lock 14
Lock 14 is the only lock on the canal where wooden gates have been restored. The lock was once part of a much larger complex, including a large canal boat basin between locks 14 and 15, a mile-long steamboat basin between lock 15 and the Illinois River, two grain elevators, a huge mule barn, a locktenders' house and other facilities. We offer bicycle rentals on the scenic and historic I&M Canal State Trail.  This is a very easy and peaceful ride.  We transport you and the bike to the canal trail in Ottawa and you enjoy the day peddling the path where mules pulled the barges along the canal!  Area: Heritage Corridor.
